OLIVE RESIDENCE
Built in collaboration with DEMO Architects, the sharp angles of the Olive House were designed with careful intention to accommodate the monolithic passive home. Prismatic slopes carve out the double-height living room reorienting the south-facing house, a necessity to accommodate solar heat gain, and offer landscape views of the natural pond through expansive windows. The heart of home offers both daylight views of the dynamic Hudson Valley seasons followed by moongazing at night. Hanging paper lanterns add to the sundry of light within the south-facing home, their glow easing the transition from day to night.
The throughline of sustainability lies in every corner of the residence, with new life given to a ridgebeam cut too short, leading to its transformation as inspiration and material for the dining table fabricated by local woodworker James Harmon of Abstract Quality. With a blush-pink sink sourced from architectural salvage yard Zaborski Emporium, the downstairs bathroom is a whimsical rendering of retro revival reflected in the subway tile that accents the soft shapes in a quiet visual contrast paired with faucet fixtures from the architect’s hometown in Italy.
